FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - You may not know the name of the farmer who grows your food, but soon you can meet them face-to-face.

From Friday, July 24, through Sunday, Aug. 2, you’ll have more than 100 different chances to connect with local farmers, restaurants and markets throughout northeast Indiana’s eleven counties during the 7th Annual Local Food Week.

If you’re worried about the safety of your food, Jain Young, the farm administrator at the Rose Avenue Education Farm in New Haven, says go to one of the events and learn about it yourself.

“If you want to know that you have safe food, then you need to know your farmer,” Young said. “You need to know the farmer’s practices and ask about irrigations practices, and it’s a good idea to visit the farm.”

Dozens of the events are free, like the farm tour and Burmese-flavored food tasting at Rose Avenue Education Farm on July 28. Other events you will have to pay for, like the three course meal at Chance’s Bar in Fort Wayne.

If you go to any of the events, you’ll help grow the local food scene, which has been a goal of Young’s since she helped start the Education Farm nearly seven years ago.

“I’d like to see more people be involved in the local food scene and really make a commitment to a bigger portion of their food dollar going to local farms and local businesses,” Young said.
