One man in critical condition following near head-on crash in Steuben County

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) - One man was critically injured in a near head-on crash in Steuben County early Friday morning.

According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened just after 4 a.m. on US 20, near West Otter Lake in rural Jackson Township.

An initial crash investigation indicates a Kia passenger vehicle was heading east on US 20 when it crossed the center line on a curve in the roadway, striking a semi that was driving west on US 20.

The driver of the semi attempted to avoid the collision by veering to the north shoulder of the roadway, but the two vehicles crashed nearly head-on.

Authorities say the collision caused the driver of the Kia to become trapped inside his vehicle. The driver was freed from the vehicle by Orland Fire Rescue and transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Police note that some fog and wet road conditions were present at the time of the crash.

This incident remains under investigation.
