ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) - Thanks to the community’s help, the United Way of Allen County says it has reached its Emergency Food Campaign fundraising goal to support local food pantries.

As many families went without full SNAP benefits during the government shutdown, many turned to food banks for help.

To help ensure food pantries could meet that need, the United Way launched the Emergency Food Campaign to support efforts at Associated Churches, Community Harvest, and Miss Virginia’s.

On Monday, a spokesperson for the United Way of Allen County said they were just $5,000 away from meeting the $45,000 goal.

On Friday, they announced that they had successfully reached that goal.

“We are so grateful to our community for coming together to meet this important goal,” Executive Director of United Way of Allen County Brandi Buck said. “Because of their generosity, families across Allen County will have access to the food and support they need during this challenging time.”

The organization says funds will be given to the three partner agencies in the coming days, and will continue to support food access through events like its annual food drive in February.

They say anyone, including businesses to organizations, that are interested in sponsoring the food drive or hosting a collection bin should contact the United Way for details.
