FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The Elex is the newest residential project at the Electric Works innovation district. Developers say it’s designed to be a community that is diverse, inclusive, and accessible.

Development partner Kevan Biggs says that commitment to inclusivity has guided every decision.

The Elex features nearly 300 apartments, including affordable housing units and senior-restricted residences.

Biggs says the project also incorporates wellness facilities, fitness areas, and an early childhood learning center.

Longtime Fort Wayne resident Beverly Harding says the impact goes beyond bricks and mortar.

Harding has retired from her job supporting the blind and disabled, and she says accessibility has always been her mission and her need.

She explains that it hasn’t always been the case in other housing situations throughout her life.

For Harding, moving into The Elex is also deeply personal. The development sits on the site of the old General Electric campus, a place where her own family once worked.

The Elex has two apartment buildings in the neighborhood, Harding stays in the one with age restrictions, and the building on the other side is for all ages.

Developers say those apartments won’t be available until next year.
