GRANT COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) - A semi-truck driver is dead after a suspected road rage incident Sunday night, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Grant County Sheriff’s deputies, along with officers from the Fairmont and Upland Police Departments, were dispatched to reports of a shooting on State Road 26 at about 10:16 p.m., according to a news release. A 911 caller said he fired several shots into a semi after the driver allegedly pointed a weapon with a laser light at him after a road rage incident on I-69.

The caller told dispatchers the semi left the roadway and into a cornfield.

When deputies were en route to the shooting, they saw a fire in the distance, the release says. They found that the semi driver struck a silo in the 5000 block of East 975 South after driving through about two-thirds of a mile through three cornfields.

The driver’s body was found inside the semi’s cab after the fire was extinguished.

The unidentified man’s body is in the custody of Grant County Coroner Stephen Dorsey, the release says. Dorsey, crime scene investigators, deputies, and an investigator with the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the incident.

No arrests have been made at this time.
