FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A trio of former Indiana Hoosiers will continue their college football journey this year at Saint Francis.

Quarterback Grant Gremel, running back Brett Wethington, and running back McCall Ray all joined the Cougars earlier this year as graduate transfers.

This wasn’t something they all planned together.

“It was actually at different times,” Ray said. “It just so happened that it was the place that we all picked.”

Although it wasn’t a coordinated effort, the three offensive players do appreciate the opportunity to continue their playing careers together.

“Having a receiver that you already have chemistry with and having a running back that you already have chemistry with definitely makes the transition easier,” Gremel said. “Just getting to know the offense and everyone better.”

They’ll try to take their lessons from Bloomington to Bishop D’Arcy Stadium this fall.

“Three years of Big Ten coaching has really prepared me for this moment,” Wethington said. “My football IQ has gone up a lot since having that experience. I’m excited to carry that over.”

Gremel, Wehtington, and Ray all walked-on at Indiana, having to fight to earn their spots on the team. They bring that same work ethic to Fort Wayne.

“I think we’re just going to be another piece to the puzzle,” Ray said. “I think we’re a team striving for one goal and that’s greatness. I think we’re going to achieve that.”

The new Cougars and their teammates begin the 2023 season at home against Saint Xavier on Saturday night at 6pm.
