FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Hudson Shroyer got a very important letter in the mail back in February.

Shroyer began caddying at the Fort Wayne Country Club in the summer before eighth grade.

“My older brother was into golf,” Shroyer said. “He also was a caddie here for three years before I got here. So I was just following in his footsteps, I guess.”

The Canterbury student continued to caddie throughout his high school years. Last fall, he began the application process for the Chick Evans Scholarship, a program for caddies that showcase academic excellence, financial need, and outstanding character. The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition and housing at a four-year university.

After a long process, Shroyer opened up his mailbox this past winter, and found out he had been picked as one of the 325 scholarship recipients this year.

“My brother didn’t know I was home,” Shroyer said. “I tore open the envelope, too anxious to wait for anything else. I just remember screaming out in joy. And I just remember him running into the room, terrified.”

Shroyer will attend Indiana University, planning to study media and law.
