FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - It would be easy to think a Republican-authored bill would sail through a Republican-dominated legislature. But in the case of a proposed abortion ban, the process is anything but easy.
In a 7-5 vote on Tuesday, a ban on nearly all abortions cleared its first hurdle. It passed out of committee and heads to the full Senate for further debate. But the process has been fraught. Quibbling over details has turned attention to infighting among the Republican rank and file. Some anti-abortion advocates pushed for a tougher law with strict punishments for abortion providers. Others fought for more exceptions or a different approach entirely.
ABC21′s Tom Powell broke down the arguments on Tuesday’s News at 7.
