At least 46 people found dead in Texas tractor-trailer
SAN ANTONIO (AP/WPTA) - Dozens of people were found dead in a tractor-trailer in Texas on Monday evening. A US official told the Associated Press that the shocking find is a presumed case of migrant smuggling.
It is not unusual to find migrants cammed into trucks and trailers as they hope to be delivered to a better life in the United States, but Monday’s discovery in Texas is one of the largest. Officials said 16 survivors, some of them children, were taken to hospitals. Three people are said to be in custody.
Heat poses a serious danger, particularly when temperatures can rise severely inside vehicles. Weather in the San Antonio area was mostly cloudy Monday, but temperatures approached 100 degrees.
Migrants endure perilous journeys to the United States as they flee violence and poverty in their home countries. Many pay significant sums of money for the chance to cross the border. Many don’t make it.
The actual number of migrant deaths along the border is hard to calculate. While the Border Patrol keeps numbers, a recent study by the Government Accountability Office accused the agency of failing to keep accurate statistics. Humanitarian groups insist the number is in the thousands over the past decade.
