FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A man surrendered to police after a tense standoff at a motel late Friday afternoon. Police said the man, claiming to be armed and potentially holding hostages, refused to leave a room at the Economy Inn on Coliseum Boulevard.
Officers responded around 4 pm and called in a heavily armed crisis response team, hostage negotiators and a drone. Officer Mark Bieker said the man initially threatened to shoot police and himself if officers approached the room. Negotiations eventually led to the man leaving the room and surrendering to police around 6:30 pm. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Authorities noted the man was alone in the room. It’s unclear if he was actually armed.
