Indiana sued over new bail law

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A new law takes effect in July that targets non-profit bail providers. It would prevent them from bailing out anyone accused of a violent crime. But is the law fair?

The Bail Project is the non-profit organization at the heart of this case. Its leaders insist the legal system isn’t fair to everyone and criminalizes race and poverty. The organization is working with the ACLU to sue Indiana over the new law. They’re asking for an injunction to block the law as the suit works its way through the courts.

On the other side of this issue is Nikki Sterling. Her son was killed in Indianapolis in 2021. The man accused of killing him was out on bond that was approved by a judge and provided by The Bail Project.
