Earth Day events planned for Fort Wayne this weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - From trash pick-ups to a guided walk through the Eagle Marsh Nature Preserve, there are many different ways to celebrate Earth Day in the Summit City.

Kicking off the weekend is the “Earth Day Pick-Up & Throw Down” event by Sunrise Movement Fort Wayne and Junk Ditch Brewing Company. It will start at the Lawton Skatepark parking lot with a trach pick-up from 9 to 11 a.m. Then at noon, a gathering is planned for Junk Ditch featuring a clothing swap, a food truck, a food drive to benefit Forward Indiana community pantries, and live music.

In an event geared towards kids, Science Central has planned guest speakers and demonstrations for its Earth Day celebration on Saturday. Officials say the demonstrations will feature Science on a Sphere at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., and will explore the difference between weather and climate. More details here.

On Sunday, the Little River Wetlands Project is hosting its first Earth Day event in two years from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Eagle Marsh Barn, 6801 Engle Rd. During the event, attendees can hike through the marsh with an Indiana Master Naturalist as their guide, take home a native plant, learn about foraging, check out local vendors, and stop by over a dozen different interactive education stations. If you’re looking to do your part in planting some trees, Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation is offering seedlings at no cost for those who register in advance. Officials say to call 260-427-6000 during normal business hours now through April 28 to reserve a seedling, which must be picked up on April 29 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Foster Park West parking lot.
