Slick roads cause multiple slide-offs Monday, police say

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Freezing rain early Monday morning caused traffic headaches for drivers and contributed to dozens of accidents on area roads.

Officers were called to the I-469 ramp at I-69 south by the GM plant on reports of a crash. They say a semi that was carrying salt was trying to go from I-469 to I-69 and slid off the ramp, rolling over. No injuries were reported in that crash. Troopers said they had I-69 closed for a time as crews salted the road but has since reopened.

A rollover accident involving a pickup truck on I-69 southbound near Leesburg Road was among many such incidents in which drivers apparently lost control of their vehicles.

Police are urging drivers to use caution as they have responded to several crashes due to the slick roads. Drivers are also advised to ensure they have clear views through their windshields and side windows. Ice is accumulating on those, as well as mirrors and headlights, adding to the problem of slick pavement.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory set to remain in effect for the entire ABC21 viewing area until 4 p.m.
