City seeks feedback for planned MLK monument

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the City of Fort Wayne is conducting a survey asking residents for input on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. monument planned for downtown.

The City selected phrases from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech on June 5, 1963, that can be put on the Pillars of Hope and Justice monument. The monument, in honor of the 60th anniversary of Dr. King’s visit to Fort Wayne, will feature six pillars set in a circle. The monument will be placed at the southeast corner of 420 West Berry Street, where the speech took place, in June of 2023.

Residents interested in selecting which statements will appear on the monument can rank the statements on the City’s website.

The survey will be available until Feb. 28. Results of the survey will be shared with the public in the summer of 2022.
