FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The Allen County Department of Health has reported a record-high amount of new COVID-19 cases Wednesday as the omicron variant surges throughout the state, nearly doubling the previous record.
The department reported 1,244 new cases Wednesday, with 373 confirmed PCR cases and 871 probable antigen cases, bringing the total to 78,932 cases and 967 deaths. The second-highest amount of new cases was reported to the department on Dec. 31, with 651 cases.
Due to the shortage of rapid tests in the state, the Indiana State Department of Health adjusted its guidance for the tests. Now, rapid tests are reserved for anyone 18 and younger and symptomatic individuals ages 50 and older. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests are available to anyone, regardless of age or symptoms.
Mid-December, Parkview Health said it is “maintaining services and access to care” during the rise in cases while acknowledging the strain caused by near-record high hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients.
Tune in tonight at 5 and 6 for reaction from local health leaders on the surge in cases.
