DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) - A husband and wife who live outside the town of St. Joe are hoping for answers about what happened to a treasured car stolen this week from their property. Thieves broke into an attached garage and snuck out with the car while the couple was sleeping inside their home.

Kevin and Michele Rickman want police to track down those who pulled off the heist of their 2021 Dodge Charger on Monday night. They bought the car in October and had it parked in their garage when they went to bed.

The next morning, the bottom of the garage door was bent and the car was gone. Their son who came home from his third shift job discovered things out of place.

“He found it, the door all bent up. He was scared, he didn’t know what happened,” Kevin Rickman said. “He was wondering if they were still in the house.”

The car is fully insured. The couple at times wants the car found and returned, at other times they aren’t certain.

“I want to know what happened to it. I want to know where it is and all that, but at the same time I’m scared that somebody would still come back and try to get it again,” Michele Rickman said.

The Rickmans presume the crooks used something like a crowbar and landscaping bricks from their side yard to pry the garage door up enough so that someone could slip under, then pull the garage door release, allowing the door to be lifted the rest of the way up. It’s their theory that the thieves pushed the car out to the road, some distance from the home, before they started it up and drove off.

So far, no arrests have been made. The Rickmans have lived at the property for years, but for the first time are planning to install a security system.
