STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) - Rolling hills and over 100 lakes make Steuben county a change of scenery compared to flatter parts of 21Country.

One popular site you’ll find in Steuben county? Pokagon State Park, located just north of Angola and on the east shore of Lake James. The park has been known for its winter toboggan, but there are plenty of activities to keep you busy and make life even better in Steuben county.

Pokagon State Park features camping, hiking trails, and a saddle barn that offers horseback riding through the park. The park also borders or encompasses three lakes. And Trine Recreation Area, located across Interstate 69, has even more land and a lake for fishing and wildlife viewing.

If you’d like to spend even more time at Pokagon State Park, the Potawatomi Inn offers a place to stay, or a location to host events, like weddings and family reunions.

And if you’re ready to hit that classic winter toboggan, it opens the Friday after Thanksgiving.

After spending the morning or day at Pokagon, Timbuktoo’s restaurant is just a few minutes away in Fremont.

The restaurant, originally known as the Herb Garden, has been in business for 28 years. If being on the water reminded you of your love of seafood, this restaurant may be exactly what you’re looking for. Timbuktoo’s specializes in seafood and steaks. They also make their own sauces and are known for their signature spinach balls.

While the owners of Timbuktoo’s have certainly had to adapt to changing times, whether it be the coronavirus pandemic or the current worker shortage, they say they plan to be in business for years to come.

Unique scenery--and persevering local business and restaurants--continue to make life even better in Steuben county.
